Accelerated 4+1 Program

Dear Incoming Lehigh Students,

Welcome to Lehigh and the M.S. in Financial Engineering Accelerated 4+1 program!  This 4+1 program complements your primary program of study and allows you to enter and complete the graduate-level M.S. in Financial Engineering program (MFE) seamlessly.  The MFE 4+1 program is built to maximize your undergraduate time, develop relationships with faculty and upper-class students, provide graduate-level tuition savings, and, connect you with our extensive Alumni MFE network for potential internships and projects experience.

Registration for MFE 4+1

Required courses for the MFE 4+1 are:

  • Calculus I

  • Calculus II

  • Probability and Statistics

  • Investments (FIN 323)

There are many different combinations of courses that will suffice for the first three courses.  The pathways on the MFE 4+1 page provide detailed information. The pathways include planning for prerequisite courses that will allow you to enroll in FIN 323 Investments, no matter your primary program of study.

Freshmen should consider the calculus sequence in which they should be enrolling.  Depending on your circumstances, you may be taking the ALEKs math placement test and determining your calculus placement.  Note that the approved calculus sequences are based on the approved sequence for your primary program of study, except for College of Health students.  College of Health students must enroll in MATH 021 Calculus I and MATH 022 Calculus II sequence.  Certain programs may have a choice of calculus courses.  Please consult the MFE 4+1 page for approved calculus courses and sequences for all programs.

The approved series of courses for calculus are listed below, and your primary program of study guides the selection:

  • MATH 021 Calculus I and MATH 022 Calculus II
(MATH 023 Calculus III is recommended)

OR

  • MATH 081 Calculus with Business Applications I and MATH 082 Calculus with Business Applications II

OR

  • MATH 031 Honors Calculus I and MATH 032 Honors Calculus II
(MATH 033 Honors Calculus III is recommended)

Looking ahead,

ACCT 151 Introduction to Financial Accounting and FIN 125 Introduction to Finance are taken in the sophomore year.
You will also need to enroll in a math-based statistics course, which typically has a prerequisite of Calculus II.  Possible statistics courses vary by college, major, or program of enrollment, and you should consult your advisor for the correct statistics course.  The MFE Pathways page also provides guidance. BU students, ECO 045 Business Statistics will not fulfill the statistics prerequisite for the MFE degree.  You should consider MATH 231(Probability and Statistics) or consult your advisor for the proper course. IBE Undergraduates pursuing an IBE-Financial Engineering Degree and or dual degree ISE-ISE degree should take ISE 111 (Engineering Probability) and ISE 121 (Applied Engineering Statistics).

Once these prerequisite courses are successfully completed, FIN 323 Investments can be taken.  Students with room in their schedules in their junior and senior years may enroll in and reserve graduate-level courses toward the MFE degree.

The MFE 4+1 team is ready to provide you with the guidance you need for success in the quant world. Connect with us!

Sincerely,

Your MFE 4+1 Team
