July 26, 2024 - Registration ends. You'll be able to change your schedule again beginning at orientation.

For IBE students, course selection is usually fairly easy since the first semester curriculum is standard and pre-specified. Students with AP or other college credits will deviate from the standard curriculum, but most of these deviations are explained below as well.

The standard first semester curriculum for IBE students is shown below. If you do not have AP or other college credits you should sign up for these courses.

Your schedule will look similar to this, however, due to AP, SAT, and transfer credit, you may be eligible to register for more advanced courses.

IBE Scheduling Guide

The extensive amount of courses and variety of course meeting times may make scheduling seem overwhelming, but by following the tips below, you will be able to create a schedule that allows you to successfully begin your academic career at Lehigh!

  • Review the sample schedules specific to your program on the Intercollegiate Programs page of the First-Year Student Website for an idea of the courses you should be registering for.
  • Develop a few schedules with varying times! Although you may not get into your first class choice, we will make sure that you can register for all of the classes you need.
  • Be sure to create a full-time (12 credit minimum) schedule with the primary classes you need. If necessary, you will be able to make changes to your schedule when you come to campus in the fall.

We recommend that you register for courses in the following order to help ease the schedule building process:
(Note: This is a guide to help you plan, but it is not required that you register in this order.)

  1. Register for IBE 010. This course is required for all IBE students, and there is only one section.
  2. Select your sections of PHY 011 and PHY 012. Avoid PHY 012 sections on a Monday afternoon, as these will conflict with IBE 010.
  3. Select a section of ECO 001.
  4. Select a section of MATH 021 (or an upper-level calculus course if AP credit was received).
  5. Select your section of WRT 001. There are multiple sections of this course available at varying times, so it will be easiest to fit this course into your plan once you’ve secured your other courses.
Variations on the Basic Schedule Resulting from AP or Other College Credit

If you have received AP or other advanced college credit for some of the first-year courses, the following rules will help determine which courses you should take.

  1. Students with credit for Physics 11 and 12 should take Chem 30 .
  2. Students with credit for both Chem 30 and Physics 11 should take contact Prof. Storer or Kish for advice.
  3. Students with credit for Math 21 should take Math 22.
  4. Students with credit for both Math 21 and Math 22 MAY take Math 23 (see note below).
  5. Students with credit for Math 021,022, and Physics 11,12 and Chem 030 may take Math 023 and Physics 21,22.
  6. Students with credit for Writing 1 should take Engineering 010
  7. Students with credit for Writing 1 and Physics 11,12 and Chem 030 should contact Prof. Storer or Kish for advice.
  8. Students with credit for Eco 001 and Writing 001 should contact Prof. Storer or Kish for advice.

Note: We generally advise that students with AP credits accept these credits rather than retaking the course at Lehigh. The one exception is for students with credit for Math 021 and 022 (Calc I and II).  Many IBE students in the past have jumped right into Math 023 (Calc III) in the first semester. Our experience has been that about half of our students do quite well (A, A-, B+) while the other half do not.  Please consider carefully your confidence in calculus when making the decision of starting in Math 023 or Math 022.
